(60 minutes)
In this section, we're going to create our own fishing dances.
Watch the following video tutorials.
Work in pairs to complete the activities outlined in each video.
Spend about 10-12 minutes on each section.
Use the checklist at the bottom of the page to assess your progress.
Once everyone has finished, take turns sharing your dances with your classmates.
Step 1: Entrance
|
Video Review:What are you fishing for? What does that type of fish look like? Is it big? Small? Is there something about this fish that makes it different from all the others? Does it move smoothly through the water or dart quickly from side to side? Think about all of the different parts of the fish’s body and how they might move. What does the fish’s mouth do? The fins? The gills? The tail? Is this fish excited? Lazy? Hungry? Does it swim at the top of the water or way down deep?
Begin at the edge of the space, away from the center of the room, and move into the space like your specific fish. You will have 20 counts to make your entrance as your fish. |
Step 2: Shape Story
|
Video Review:What equipment do you use to fish? Are you fishing with a line? A fishing rod? A net? A hook? What type of clothes do you wear when you fish? Are they warm weather or cold weather clothes? Do you need a boat? Does it have oars? A motor? Are you using bait? Where will you store the fish you’ve caught? What else might you have with you? How long will you be fishing: are you bringing food? Once you’ve caught the fish, do you need any other tools to process the fish?
Think of at least 4 different items you will use when you fish. Shape yourself like each of those items. Go through your 4 shapes, then repeat and go through your 4 shapes again. Add these to your entrance, and practice the whole dance together. |
Step 3: Exaggerated Actions
|
Video Review:Think of what happens at the moment you are catching a fish. What do you do as the person fishing? Are you pulling up a line? Bringing in a net? Reeling the fish in? Is the fish fighting against you? Think of what the fish is doing at the moment it is being caught? Is it trying to swim away? Is it moving from side to side? Is it heading for the bottom? What happens when it breaks through the surface of the water?
Taking turns between “catching” and “being” the fish, find a way to exaggerate at least 3 of these actions. Maybe this means you slow an action way down. Maybe you make it much larger. Maybe you use different parts of your body, like your arms, legs, hands, head, etc. to show different actions. Maybe you move an action through the space. Maybe you show the fish’s movements on the ground and the fishing movements standing up. Maybe you exaggerate the effort. Practice and memorize your 3 exaggerated actions. Add these to your dance, and practice the whole dance together. |
Step 4: Learn about Fair Use
|
Once you have created and practiced your dances, it’s time to choose some music to help bring your dances to life. There are lots of things to think about when selecting music for dancing. Sometimes the music is made to go with the dance. Sometimes the dance is made to go with the music. Sometimes, like in our fishing dances, the two are made separately. Some dances have no music at all.
This video teaches us about selecting music for dances we might like to share publicly, in an internet video, for example, or for a public performance. |
Step 5: Choose Your Music
