By participating in "My Fishing Dance," students will. . .
. . .Explore a variety of cultural dance forms, seating dances firmly inside their geographic contexts, generating necessary background knowledge while highlighting place-based learning.
View clips of dances from Alaska Native culture, presented alongside dances from other cultures, strengthening Native students' sense of belonging/positively contributing to a global dance community.
. . .Learn portions of the Japanese folk dance: Soran Bushi:
Soran Bushi, a popular folk dance about fishing in old Japan, engages remote Alaskan students in making cultural connections to subsistence fishing in their own communities. Through this activity, students will begin to view dance as a language of cultural communication.
. . .Create a place-based dance about fishing.
Through a series of brief video tutorials, students will be guided through the process of creating a short dance outlining relevant aspects of fishing in their community.
Students will be exposed to 21st century skills in a mini-lesson about digital responsibility. Through selecting music for potential public sharing, students will be introduced to the concept of fair use, and guided through the process of locating "no copyright" music appropriate for public sharing.
